      Entitlement to registration under the Indian Act is based on the degree of descent from ancestors who are registered or entitled to be registered.

      To find out if you're entitled to be registered, ask yourself:

      • Are either or both of my parents registered or entitled to be registered?
      • Are any of my grandparents registered or entitled to be registered?
      • Is anyone in my immediate or extended family registered or entitled to be registered?

      You may be entitled to be registered if:

      • at least one of your parents is registered or entitled to be registered under subsection 6(1) of the Indian Act

      or

      • both of your parents are registered or entitled to be registered under subsection 6(1) or 6(2) of the Indian Act

      Financial Hardship Assistance

      Financial Hardship Assistance Grant

      ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation recognizes some Members may experience circumstances that affect their ability to pay for their non-discretionary household expenses and basic needs from time to time. This policy outlines the assistance available to those members experiencing genuine financial hardship.

      Financial hardship is a circumstance of experiencing a lack of financial means, which may be either temporary or ongoing. In short, if a member of the ʔAkisq̓nuk First Nation has the intention but not the financial capacity to pay their basic household expenses such as food or basic utilities, they are deemed to be experiencing financial hardship. Chief and Council are committed to providing additional support to assist members in this situation.

      Elkhorn Land Claim Settlement policy

      Elkhorn Land Claim Settlement

      In accordance with AFN Council resolution 2021/22-#377 (June 15, 2022), eligibility for participation in the Elkhorn Ranch Specific Claims Proceeds (PCD) is limited to those whose names appeared on the AFN Indian Registration as of March 14, 2022, which is the date both parties signed the Elkhorn Ranch Specific Claims Agreement.

      Minors Trust Update

      Council selected First Nations Bank (FNB) Trust to act as trustee for the minors eligible to receive a per capita distribution from the Elkhorn Settlement. Administration is now working with First Nations Bank to set up the trusts. As part of the set-up process, FNB will hold information sessions and prepare a FAQ document to provide minors and their guardians information. Additional information on these information sessions, and the timing to set up the trusts will be circulated to minors and their guardians in the near future. Applications for withdrawals from the minors trusts, in ac-cordance with the Elkhorn Settlement Proceeds Policy, will be considered once the trusts have been established.
